Amid Kolkata’s vibrant cultural landscape, I recently had the privilege of leading a mandala art workshop at Anthelion School of Art, a beloved institution celebrated for its dedication to nurturing and teaching the fine arts in the city.

Against the colorful and warm backdrop of Anthelion, our session brought together nine remarkable women from diverse age groups, each carrying a unique perspective and a willingness to explore the meditative world of mandalas. My intention went beyond teaching the techniques of mandala drawing; I wanted to unveil its deeper, therapeutic potential—a path to self-expression, self-discovery, and healing.

The workshop was designed from the start to foster a genuine sense of connection. Each participant introduced herself, sharing her background and any previous encounters with mandalas. This exchange helped break the ice, forming a warm and supportive space defined by shared curiosity and passion. Watching these women open up was a reminder of art’s profound ability to unite, and we moved seamlessly from introductions to the main session.

As we delved deeper, I led the group through a presentation on the history and cultural significance of mandalas. Together, we traced their origins from ancient spiritual practices in Buddhism to modern-day expressions of creativity and mindfulness such as in mehndis, alpona designing and making rangolis.

We explored the various types and purposes of mandalas, spanning from sacred symbols in spiritual traditions to contemporary art. Each participant also received a booklet I’d prepared, filled with key insights, patterns, and motifs—a guide and a source of inspiration.

The workshop itself became an experience that was as calming for me as it was transformative for them. As each woman took up her blank sheet, something magical began to unfold. With each careful stroke, their pages blossomed with intricate, harmonious patterns, each line an expression of their focus and care. With a curated backdrop of calming music, it was profoundly moving to watch how effortlessly they became absorbed in the creative process.

Some shared how they’d lost track of time, captivated by the rhythm of each line—a true flow state, where their minds were fully anchored in the present moment. This immersion in self-discovery and inner potential became one of the workshop’s most rewarding aspects.

As the session progressed, I saw the therapeutic benefits of mandala art come to life. Participants described how drawing mandalas offered them a deeply healing experience, a quiet retreat from the pressures and speed of daily life. Others expressed awe at seeing their blank sheets transform into beautiful, intricate designs. In those moments, they could set aside life’s demands, focusing purely on creation and experiencing the joy of bringing their thoughts to life on paper.

In today’s world, where mental health challenges are widespread, art therapy has become an invaluable resource. Mandala art, in particular, offers profound potential for calming the mind, allowing individuals to find an enduring sense of peace and contentment, free from the digital noise and distractions of modern life.

This workshop underscored that art is more than just a creative outlet; it can be a lifeline, a powerful way to manage stress and cultivate mental clarity. It was deeply fulfilling to watch participants embrace this practice, knowing they could turn to it whenever they needed a refuge.

In Kolkata—a city that harmoniously blends tradition and modernity—mandala art finds a natural place within the cultural fabric. The rising popularity of this therapeutic art mirrors the growth of other mindful, expressive practices that enrich our community. Workshops like these belong not only in art studios but in schools, workplaces, and public spaces, offering individuals—especially those seeking mental well-being—a way to reconnect with their creative selves and find inner harmony.

Facilitating this workshop at Anthelion School of Art, surrounded by Kolkata’s rich cultural landscape and vibrant talent, was a true privilege. I look forward to continuing to share the healing potential of mandala art and similar practices, helping more people discover paths to create, heal, and find peace.

For those seeking calm, beauty, and self-discovery, mandala art holds limitless possibilities—a gentle reminder that, in its most profound form, art has the power to transform and heal in deeply meaningful ways.
